Many Canberra homes were built decades ago, long before modern insulation standards were introduced. As a result, it’s common for homeowners to discover their property has little insulation, outdated insulation, or insulation that has deteriorated over time.
If your home feels cold in winter, heats up quickly in summer, or has high energy bills, inadequate insulation could be the cause.
One of the most common issues we see during roof inspections is thin or patchy insulation in the ceiling space. In many older homes, insulation may only provide an R-value of around R2, which is far below what is recommended for Canberra’s climate today. Modern ceiling insulation upgrades typically aim for R5.0 or higher, which can significantly improve comfort and reduce heating costs.
You may not know this, but the ACT Government now requires most rental properties to meet minimum ceiling insulation standards. If a rental property has no insulation or insulation below the minimum threshold, it may need to be upgraded to comply with current regulations.
Other signs your home may need an insulation upgrade include:
• Rooms that heat up or cool down very quickly
• Uneven temperatures between different rooms
• Dusty, compressed or damaged insulation in the roof space
• Cold drafts or chilly floors in winter.
